Lazy Writing — It Just Won’t Do

‎”So avoid using the word ‘very’ because it’s lazy. A man is not very tired, he is exhausted. Don’t use very sad, use morose. Language was invented for one reason, boys – to woo women – and, in that endeavor, laziness will not do. It also won’t do in your essays.” -John Keating, ‘Dead Poets Society’

Need I say more?

  1. I think Mark Twain wrote something like this – “In your writing, replace every instance of the word ‘very’ with the word ‘damn’. Your editor will delete it entirely and your work will be much better for it.”

    Thanks for the reminder.
