On Poetry

“You’ll never be able to make a living writing poems” she said.

I said,

“That’s true enough.”

Just as accurately say,

“You’ll never make a living as an adjunct.”

Still. Silence. Wonder.

A world without poetry would be a poor one indeed.

What about teaching?

It’s no money-maker. Instead,

It feeds the soul

Of the poetry lover,

Sometime writer,

Underpaid teacher who says,

“I am rich, because of poetry.”
